Children with Special Needs

If you are the parent of a child who has developmental difficulties or is at risk of developing them, we have two programs available to assist you, depending on the age of your child.

Infants & Toddlers with Special Needs

If you are the parent of a child from birth to age 3 who:

  • is slow to roll, sit or crawl
  • is slow to grasp and explore toys
  • doesn't smile at others after age 2 months
  • doesn't babble by 6 months or use words by 12 months
  • has medical difficulties or a diagnosed condition (e.g., Down's Syndrome)
  • was premature or low birth weight
  • had a difficult birth or went through a complicated pregnancy
  • was adopted or lost connections in other ways

or you as a parent are:

  • young, single, isolated
  • having emotional or physical problems
  • dealing with loss, trauma or family violence
  • having difficulty dealing with your baby
  • wanting support with breastfeeding

we can help. The Infant Development Consultant will meet with you in your home to discuss your situation, decide with you what your goals are, and develop a time-specific plan to meet those goals. She can meet with you and your child in your home on a weekly basis.

Older Children with Special Needs

If you are the parent of a child aged 3 to 12 who has special needs, you may receive help from our Resource Consultants. They are trained in Early Childhood Education, specializing in interventions with children with special needs. Our resource consultants:

  • do formal and informal screening on your child's developmental progress
  • develop an individual service plan to meet the needs of you and your child
  • connect with medical specialists (e.g., Five Counties Children's Centre staff) to help you, and other people who work with your child, to consistently carry out the recommended treatments
  • help you obtain supports for which you may be eligible because of your child's diagnosis (e.g., Special Services at Home, Assistance for Children with Disabilities, child care subsidy, etc.)
  • help you, your child and the school prepare for a successful entry into the school system

Point in Time also provides licensed child care programs with enhanced funding in order for children with special needs to be successfully integrated into their programs.
